I, Shakespeare

Written By: Tim Crouch

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

I, Shakespeare features Tim Crouch’s version of four self contained, one performer, Shakespearean plays:

Macbeth, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, and A Midsummer Nights Dream.

I, Caliban tells the story of the of the title character and the preceding moments that follow after the departure of Prospero and Miranda.

My adaptation of the piece is set on England’s most remote island, Fair Isle. Situated atop a pile of discarded and washed up knit garments, Caliban is dressed in a traditional Fair Isle knit sweater. Each row tells an individual story of his life- from his mothers traditional Algerian prints to catching his first crabs, the sweater is Caliban’s history. Nevertheless, his history begins to unravel as constant loss and intrusion block his own self perception.
